Rotary.org: From SharePoint 2007 to a Responsive Drupal Site Serving 1.2 Million Members in 7 languages

The Choice:

The decision to move the site from SharePoint 2007 to something was easy, choosing that something to power the new branding effort was a vital step to the success of the project. An in depth review of Ektron, Sitecore, Drupal and WordPress was initiated, and after thoughtful consideration of each Drupal was chosen.

Challenge:

The business goals of the site were to provide a common communication platform for a world-wide, multilingual membership base, create a central point of access for a large number of information and management systems, as well as raise public awareness of the organization, its mission and its clubs.

Solution:

A unique aspect of this project is Office365/SharePoint 2013 integration, which had just been released during the early stages of the project. The integration module includes a document reference field that allows Office365 documents to be associated with Drupal entities. The module actually authenticates against a SharePoint 2013 REST endpoint to fetch document meta data which is stored along with the document references that permit direct download of files that "live" in SharePoint 2013. We are currently seeking approval to release this module on drupal.org.

Another interesting aspect of the site is the level of multilingual content management across the site. Each piece of content, including photos, news stories, photos, and even archived webinars was translated by a dedicated staff at Rotary. NorthPoint created custom dashboards and language negotiation routines to ensure that the translations proceeded smoothly through a custom workflow and that the correct translation were delivered to the user based on their detected language.

The fact that the site is fully responsive on 3 breakpoints, all the way from typography and layout to image delivery should also be an interesting footnote, as the site's template was build entirely on the Foundation framework.
