For those of you who made it out to DrupalCon Austin, thank you for helping us make this the best DrupalCon yet! For those who were unable to make it, we hope to see you at one of our upcoming DrupalCons— and, in the meantime, here’s some information to tide everyone over.

We had tons of great sessions at DrupalCon Austin, and are thrilled to share them with you. Check out the full video playlist to see all the great talks the Drupal community enjoyed, and make sure you share your feedback on your DrupalCon Austin experience in this survey.

This was the most widely attended DrupalCon yet, and also one of the most diverse! We had nearly 3,500 people from 60 countries in attendance, with a gender breakdown of 77% male, 20% female, 3% decline to share, and 13 individuals who self-identifed as “other.”

By the end of DrupalCon Austin, Drupal 8 had already been installed on 65 machines, and sprinters made huge progress on Drupal 8 beta blockers. But to get Drupal 8 out the door, we’ll need help from the whole community— so make sure you come to DrupalCon Amsterdam and DrupalCon Latin America to help us get the CMS up and running!

Just because Austin is over doesn’t mean that there’s time to relax. Make sure you submit your DrupalCon Amsterdam session ideas, training proposals, and scholarship/grant applications by this Friday, June 13th.

And, as a last reminder, when one DrupalCon ends, planning on another begins! DrupalCon Los Angeles is coming in 2015. We hope to see you there!

DrupalCon North America Kicks Off in Austin

DrupalCon Austin 2014 kicks off today in Austin, Texas, at the Austin Convention Center. More than 3,300 people are expected to attend the event, which offers educational and networking opportunities for the mix of developers, designers, IT managers, agencies and Fortune 500 companies that make up the Drupal community.

In keeping with tradition, DrupalCon Austin will start with a keynote address from Dries Buytaert, the founder of the Drupal project. The address will be followed by three days of keynotes, technical sessions, training and networking events. Speakers include renowned open source expert Erynn Petersen and the SXSW Interactive Festival Director, Hugh Forrest.

DrupalCon Austin comes in the midst of a very exciting time for the community. There are now well over 1,000,000 documented Drupal websites live on the web, and a large share of them are large, complex, high traffic sites. Additionally, Drupal-based businesses have recently experienced unprecedented interest from investors. DrupalCon North America is also a forum for the community to work together on Drupal 8, the powerful upcoming release of Drupal.

Drupal 8 Technical Sessions
DrupalCon Austin will feature a long list of technical sessions focused on the highly anticipated upcoming Drupal 8 release. Drupal 8 will include several new features and capabilities including improved support for HTML5, Web services and mobile support with responsive design capabilities out of the box. Drupal 8 sessions will cover a variety of topics including the new field API, upgrading modules to Drupal 8, improved multilingual capabilities, and the new unified plugin system. DrupalCon Austin will also feature tracks specifically devoted to Symfony, which has several components included in Drupal 8 core.

ATX Hack for Change: One Weekend, Infinite Impact

Just before DrupalCon Austin, you can join Austin changemakers and techies for a weekend of high-energy hacking, snacking and good will at the Austin Hack for Change.

This second annual event is a unique approach to a hackathon. Instead of just getting together to work on creative ideas, a number of local nonprofit are bringing their problems and people to the table. Each nonprofit has identified project ideas and Project Owners to serve as experts for the weekend. Hackers can sign up, show up, find the project that inspires them the most, and join a team to help make the world a little better place.

Bring your laptop, creativity, and enthusiasm for design to ATX Hack for Change and enjoy delicious eats and tasty, caffeinated (and/or alcoholic) drinks over a fast-paced weekend designing for change.

About The Event

ATX Hack for Change is the annual civic and social good hackathon hosted by St. Edward's University in conjunction with the National Day of Civic Hacking. This year's event is co-presented by St. Edward's University, South by Southwest, and Open Austin. By providing a space for non-profits and other community organizations to directly access the skills and expertise of Austin's most noble technologists, we hope to facilitate the creation of tools and solutions that have long-term impact for the good of the city as a whole.

DrupalCon Austin Photo Scavenger Hunt

Let's Have Some Fun!

We want to get you out of the Convention Center and into Austin proper, so we've devised this photo scavenger hunt that should keep you outside long enough to enjoy some of the best sites in Austin. If you can get to everything on the list, you can go home proud.

How it Works

All we need is photographic evidence of something Drupal in as many of these locations as you can get to. It can be you in a Drupal T-shirt, your laptop covered in Drupal stickers, or perhaps a little something Drupal you pick up in the Bookstore!

You can work solo or in a team.
Upload your photos to Flickr, Twitter or Instagram with the tag #DrupalHunt.
Come find us at the Drupal Association booth number 350 next to the bookstore to show us your pics and complete an entry form.
You MUST get your entries to us by Wednesday at noon.

The Drupal Association staff will deliberate, and on Thursday at Noon, we'll tweet one of your pictures and announce you as the winner on Twitter.

Community Summit - Contribute your expertise to build our Global Communities

Thousands of Drupalers will be covering in Austin with one goal in mind, to live and breathe Drupal. With the success of the DrupalCon Prague 2013 Community Summit, leaders are called to action again to discuss and sprint on important Drupal Community topics.

Leaders Addison Berry (add1sun) and Morten Heide-Jørgensen (mortendk) along with Drupal Association staff and Community Outreach Coordinator Lauren Shey (lshey) will facilitate a full day of community sprints.

If you’re a leader in your community, willing to collaborate and tackle community topics and provide tangible outcomes, please join the DrupalCon Austin Community Summit. Questions, please contact Lauren. Can’t wait to see you there.

It's Not Too Late to Attend DrupalCon Austin

DrupalCon Austin is only two and a half weeks away— but it’s not too late to get your tickets and make arrangements, if you haven’t already.

DrupalCon is going to be a great opportunity to learn about Drupal, network within the community, and have fun in a fantastic city. Tickets and hotel rooms are still available, too, so what are you waiting for?

The Austin-Bergstrom International Airport services all major airlines, though the most common air carriers in and out of the gates are American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United. A full list of airlines that come through the Austin airport can be found here.

In addition, there are plenty of hotels within close walking distance of the convention center. Though the Hilton Austin room block is gone, there are plenty of other venues to choose from including Radisson Hotel and Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Residence Inn Austin Downtown, Hampton Inn & Suites, and Omni Hotel.

Once you’ve registered to attend, make sure you select your schedule, too. There are a number of great tracks planned for Austin on everything from frontend to Symfony to devops. Plus, there are a number of sprints, labs, and BOFs too, so you’re guaranteed to learn lots.

Also, Austin is a fantastic city with tons to do and places to check out.

Drupal in Education Summit, June 2

Do you work at a college, university, or k-12 school? If so, then we invite you to the Drupal in Education Summit to be held at the University of Texas at Austin on June 2, from 9am-4pm (leaving you plenty of time to make the DrupalCon opening reception afterwards)!

The event is free, but you need to sign up so we know how many people to expect.

The day will be a mix of traditional presentations and BOF-style discussions. You can propose a BOF the day of the event, but it’s best to submit a presentation or discussion topic ahead of time to ensure it is included in the schedule.

Be inspired

We know Drupal is very popular in the field of education, and we are all using it in creative ways. From learning management systems to digital asset managers to web applications to marketing websites -- learn how other schools “do Drupal.”

Share your experience

Have you launched a Drupal website recently that you are proud of? Started a campus Drupal users group and have tips for others looking to create their own? Developed a great user support model for your content editors? Share your awesome projects and lessons learned with your peers.

Meet new friends and colleagues

Meet higher ed and k-12 Drupalers from all different skill levels, from beginner through expert, in a variety of roles -- site builder, developer, themer, project manager, support specialist, etc. If you are running up against a challenge, there’s a good chance others are too, and can offer advice. Let’s meet up and share our collective expertise! (and then afterwards, beer.)
