ROTARY.ORG: How and Why a .NET Organization Selected Drupal

Speakers:

The Choice

Rotary International is an international service with 1.2 million members worldwide. For their new site, Rotary needed to move off from their aging SharePoint 2007 platform to one that was more powerful. Choosing this new platform to power the new branding effort was a vital step to the success of the project. An in-depth review of Ektron, Sitecore, Drupal, and WordPress was initiated, and after thoughtful consideration Drupal was chosen.

The Challenge

The business goals of the site were to provide a common communication platform for a world-wide, multilingual membership base, create a central point of access for a large number of information and management systems, as well as raise public awareness of the organization, its mission and its clubs.

Solution

A unique aspect of this project is Office365/SharePoint 2013 integration, which had just been released during the early stages of the project. The integration module includes a document reference field that allows Office365 documents to be associated with Drupal entities. The module actually authenticates against a SharePoint 2013 REST endpoint to fetch document meta data which is stored along with the document references that permit direct download of files that "live" in SharePoint 2013.
