Rebuilding a frequently asked questions site with Drupal

Speakers:

In today’s information world, everyone wants to share information to everyone: travel stories, advice to improve photographing skills, videos and screencasts, course material with additional resources and so on.

In the early 90s a frequently asked questions website was built at the tutorial services of the Engineering faculty of the University of Leuven (Belgium). As it was and still is a great resource for students, it is still popular as of today.

Unfortunately, maintaining and adding new features became more and more tedious. At some point, the only alternative was to rebuild the site from the ground up.

This presentation is an overview of the rebuilding process of this site, along with the typical questions:

  • what are the requirements for this site?
  • Since we are creating a brand new site, what are new possibilities?
  • What software can we use to build this new site on the university infrastructure and their inherent limitations?
  • Is Drupal the best solution for this problem in this specific context? Can we build all the required features?
  • What about custom development?
  • How is the existing content transferred to the new website?
  • How do student and staff experience the overhaul?
