I Survived the Drupal Module Development Boot Camp (and So Can You!)

Speakers:

In 2013, a number of Greater Los Angeles Drupal user group members got together at Droplabs for the Module Development Boot Camp, an intense series of classes and sessions that helped developers level up their Drupal and PHP skills and become module developers.

The goal was simple yet daunting: get to the finish line by writing and contributing a functional Drupal module to Drupal.org, complete with a project page and description, that anyone could download and install on their Drupal site.

In this session, we'll have both instructors and students from the boot camp, and will be discussing:

• The differences between boot camps, meetups and study groups
• How this boot camp came to be by gauging the community's interests
• Inclusiveness vs. exclusivity: our application process, 3-strikes rule and "Leave No One Behind" policy
• Books, curriculum and training resources that we used, didn't use and should have used
• A quick demo of some of the great modules our boot camp attendees wrote and contributed to Drupal.org
• Our biggest challenges to running the program and how specific members of the boot camp triumphed
• Tips and tricks for how to do a community-run boot camp in your area
• Where are they now? How the 10-session boot camp grew to 14 sessions and even spun off a module development meetup

We're excited about what we've accomplished so far, but we're looking for support and feedback for making the next one even better. Join us for this session.
