Drupal Core & D8 Onboarding

Speakers:

What can we do to make the transition to Drupal 8 easier for our community? We will have 30k+ existing developers to train. Hopefully we will have thousands of new people coming to http://drupal.org because they are excited about what they see this community has produced.

We need to think about what the community's experience with Drupal 7 has been and learn from the successes & failures. We need to have contributors be really excited about this community and the software we produce.

Drupal has been driven on a scratch-your-itch approach to software development, but unfortunately this just doesn't scale well when you have over 1 million sites using it.

If anything the jump to Drupal 8 is going to be harder for maintainers. How do we ensure that we are supporting them with the tools that they need? What structures do we need to support those modules which we all depend on?

There are lots of known barriers to participation on http://drupal.org. There are a number of ideas in the community about establishing incentives.

If we want to see the Drupal community grow, we've got to rise to the challenge.

We also need to think through how the community maintains contributed modules/themes of supported releases, when the most experienced people get drawn into the development of Drupal 9.

Although I bring no formal usability experience I have done an extensive review of options and concerns that people have identified about http://drupal.org.

I will be presenting actionable ideas that will help bring in more developers and work to keep the existing ones.
