Case Study: Migrating training.acquia.com to Drupal 7

Speakers:

Acquia's current training site is in Drupal 6 and looks very dated in its design. As part of our Build Week 2014, we decided it was high time we upgraded this poor site to something that would be more inline with our current design, as well as more functional for us and our training partners.

In this session, I'll talk about what we did to get our data from Drupal 6 to Drupal 7 (Migrate module), and how we used the Bootstrap theme to make our lives easier with the redesign. There were also some new and interesting modules (for me, anyways) that I used in this build, as well as some Views tricks to get relevant content to appear where we wanted it. Finally, I'll talk about some of the workflow issues we fixed with the new architecture, that will help our partners manage their training events.

Attendees will get insight into doing a Drupal 7 rebuild of a Drupal 6 site from start to finish, including backend and frontend development. Some of the technical aspects will be aimed at intermediate users (Migrate module), but for the most part beginners will be able to follow along just fine. Site builders and themers will benefit the most, but there will be some PHP stuff for the developer folks too.

Dave Myburgh, Senior Engineer, Acquia
I've been involved in Drupal since the days of 4.7 (I even managed to build a multilingual site with that version). I started out as mainly a themer, but I've progressed to also do module development. So I consider myself a jack-of-all-trades in Drupal-land. This skill set works well for me as the lead engineer on Acquia.com, where the marketing department requests tend to span the gamut of Drupal development.

Outside of Drupal and Acquia, I try to teach my two boys all about Drupal in the hope they will take over the family business when they're older, but my wife thinks being a doctor or a dentist would be better for them, for some weird reason :P
