A Decade of Drupal: How the Oakland Institute's Use of Drupal Has Evolved

Speakers:

The Oakland Institute was established in 2004 with a Drupal website, a driven executive director, and a couple of volunteers. Ten years on, we are an internationally regarded think tank whose research is covered in major international media, and our Drupal website is a clearinghouse of information for activists, policy makers, and local communities.

Throughout the last decade, the OI has remained nimble and streamlined while growing, which was aided by our open source website. From the early days of our director learning how to code basic html and initially using Drupal 4.0 to our fully functional, rebuilt site in Drupal 7.8, our growth as an organization has paralleled the proliferation of builds and developments within the Drupal community.

Along the way, we have:
- Transitioned to new version of Drupal as part of a major site overhaul
- Developed custom views and leveraged modules in new, interesting ways for our organization
- Used separate login credentials to give members of the press access to contracts and documents ahead of the embargoed release of reports

and more. In this session, we will discuss successes, pitfalls, and lessons learned throughout this process.
