Course Description

Learn how to use Views to effectively take control of how content is organized throughout your website.

Views is a query builder used to select, sort and display content in various ways. Whether you're creating lists of related content or building a complex events calendar, Views is an essential tool when building any Drupal website.

In this training, you'll see how powerful Views is and how you can take advantage of its advanced features to make your website more dynamic and engaging. By learning Views configuration, you'll be able to build a more effective Drupal website and avoid writing custom code.

In Drupal 8, Views will be part of Drupal core. So the skills you learn in this course can be carried over when your site gets upgraded to Drupal 8.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

• Create dynamic lists of content, displayed in a variety of formats
• Create lists of other elements in Drupal like taxonomy terms, users and comments
• Override the HTML output of Views in configuration
• Organize content in Views using sorting and filtering
• Use Views contextual filters and relationships to build more powerful and effective lists of data
• Use the most useful contrib modules to extend Views functionality

You'll be provided with a printed manual with solutions to the exercises. There will be lots of challenge exercises in the manual that you can use to expand your knowledge during or after the course.

Syllabus

Throughout the day, there will be a series of presentations, hands-on exercises, and demos. There will be lots of time for Q&A and an emphasis on doing the hands-on exercises so you can develop your skills.

The course will start at 9am. In the morning, we'll cover the following topics:

• Creating lists of content
• Filtering and sorting results
• Views displays
• Changing the HTML output of your Views

Lunch will be noon-1pm. In the afternoon, we'll cover the following topics:

• Adding relationships
• Contextual filters and related content
• Extending Views formats
• Building administrative Views
• Review and wrap-up

The course will finish at 5pm.

Prerequisites for this course

Knowledge of Drupal fundamentals. We'll send out instructions for setting up a Drupal environment on your laptop prior to the course.
