Position summary

Palantir.net is a renowned design, development, and strategy firm that uses open source technologies to help enable people to share information in new and exciting ways.

The position of Front End Developer has strong experience with standards-compliant, semantic HTML and CSS, experience in Sass and Compass, strong knowledge of JavaScript, DOM-scripting and familiarity with JavaScript frameworks like JQuery. Experience with object-oriented CSS patterns, such as SMACSS and an understanding of the importance of WCAG 2.0 and ARIA guidelines is required. An ideal candidate will also have experience with responsive and “mobile-first” site development, and with templating systems like Twig and Liquid.

While we don’t anticipate you’ll need to spend too much time on the command line, you should be comfortable working with LAMP stack software and have a basic understanding of PHP and MySQL. While your primary working environment will be a Mac, you will need to use Windows virtual machines and other browser/platform testing environments.

This is a full-time, on-site position in our Chicago office, though we will consider exceptional applicants for remote positions.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the design, development, quality assurance, implementation, and support of browser-based software applications using both proprietary and open source development tools.
  • Participate in the development of Web site designs, project functional specifications, and wireframes with other Front End Developers, team members, clients, and external partners.
  • Support Project Managers and Team Leads with client interface and follow-up.
  • Work with Project Managers, Team Leads, and other team members to create user interaction documentation and interface requirements.
  • Work closely with other team members to ensure a functional, buildable site, and rewarding user experience.
  • Participate in client training sessions and workshops.

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Participate in client training sessions and workshops.
  • Actively engage with the Drupal community through participation in regular conferences, forums, and online groups.
  • Maintain development policies, procedures, and best practices.

Relationships

  • Reports to the Director of Development and Professional Services.
  • Works as a peer to other Front End Developers and Engineers.
  • Communicates responsibilities and commitments to the project management team.
  • Collaborates with the design team.

Ideal Front End Developer qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of HTML and CSS.
  • Strong knowledge of JavaScript (especially jQuery).
  • Strong understanding of HTML design capabilities and constraints of various platforms and browsers; knowledge of Web usability and accessibility standards and best practices in Web interface design.
  • Knowledge of the Drupal 7 platform, especially theme development.
  • Experience with templating languages such as Twig or Liquid.
  • Experience with Sass and Compass and the use of grid systems.
  • Experience with object-oriented CSS patterns, such as SMACSS.
  • An understanding of the importance of WCAG 2.0 and ARIA guidelines.
  • Experience with version control systems, including Git.
  • Understanding of server-side and database technologies, especially PHP and MySQL.
