In the spirit of open source, I'd like to shine a spotlight on depression. Not because it's easy, but because it's important. Mental illness affects many of us, but the stigma attached to it dissuades most people from talking about it openly. That's not how we make progress. With this talk, I want to do my part.

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when I was thirteen, and I've been struggling with it my whole life. In this talk, I'll discuss how it has impacted my work as a developer, husband, and father.

By speaking openly about my own challenges and successes, I hope those struggling with mental illness will learn how to be happier and more productive, and others can better understand how to be helpful and supportive.

Turning your site into a mobile-first site

Building for mobile is easy, especially if you're building a new site from scratch. But what do you do if you have an existing Drupal site and you want to make it mobile friendly?

This session will discuss different strategies to turn an existing (desktop-only) Drupal site into something more palatable to today's mobile users. We'll discuss different scenarios and how to determine which method is right for you.

We'll look at:

Responsive theming and how to convert your existing theme
Mobile-only theming -- Display the same content (or different content, if you prefer) with a mobile-friendly theme
Support for mobile apps

This session will also consider technical hurdles, such as:

The effects of external caching (CDN, Varnish, Memcache, and Drupal page cache)
Proper device detection -- Never make Drupal handle this, and why
Testing on different devices
The woes of emulation

We'll consider some basic scenarios and discuss what the level of effort would be to make the leap to mobile-first from your existing site. Many of these scenarios will draw from real-world projects and how the problem of "mobilizing" was tackled.

Also, if you're looking to build a new site from scratch, we'll also discuss this as a baseline. So if you plan to build a new mobile-friendly site from scratch, there will still be plenty here for you to consider.

NOTE: This will not be a theme-oriented discussions; but rather, a strategy and implementation oriented session. Mobile experience will not be required.

We've all heard about the big changes coming in Drupal 8. And if you maintain a module, you're wondering just how complicated it's going to be to update. Is now even the right time to update? Example modules like Pants can help, but what does a "real" module look like on Drupal 8?

In this session, we'll discuss the tasks, challenges, and choices that you'll encounter when porting your module to Drupal 8. You'll get a broad understanding of the porting process as we touch many of Drupal 8's new and updated APIs. You'll see how Flag module was rebuilt and redesigned to work using 8's updated Entity system, use of plugins to provide for further expandability, and other tips and tricks you can use!

This session will be technical and assumes you are familiar with Drupal 7 development concepts and have a high level understanding of object oriented programming.

Digital Asset Management (DAM) applications are quickly becoming essential systems in business (big and small) as the depth and breadth of digital media continues to expand.

In higher education, where photography resources are paramount in branding and marketing to a wide-ranging audience, how can a DAM be developed in an era of austerity? For uploading, managing, and storing photography resources, where does a department begin?

The College of Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology embarked on an internal development project throughout 2012 and 2013 to design, develop, roll out, and refine a DAM.

We’ll look at:
The Issue: Existing data/metadata management for photography
The Analysis: Analysis of existing DAM systems available
The Decision: Why we went with Drupal
The Plan: How we approached a DAM in Drupal
The Development: Development cycles and milestones
The Roll-Out: How we implemented the DAM with existing business practices
The Future: Looking ahead at areas of improvement and new trends

More broadly, we will consider the basic structure to develop your own DAM application using Drupal based on standardized workflows and business processes. We will list a collection of modules and features that were essential in constructing our workflows.

We will also consider benefits and limitations of our deployed application, as well as our expansion into video asset management.

We will offer a downloadable package that contains a starting point for DAM development in Drupal with a preconfigured Drupal website with test content.

You'll learn that none of this is actually that scary, and for the most part the hipster stuff today is just a minor coat of polish on things that are already ingrained into our old, decrepit bones.

Zariz - "Site preview" and Content deployment

Zariz is an open source Drupal module we develop at Gizra that brings the worlds of version control and continuous deployment into the world of content.

Zariz lets users create content in branches, and then merge them, resolve conflicts etc - allowing writers, editors and other content creators the same flexibility over their work that developers have had with code for years.

This enables sites to test-publish stories and see how they reflect over all the site's various pages (e.g. homepage, story page, section page, top stories etc) and then release them to the live site with a single click, similarly to continuous deployment development methodologies.

In this session I will demonstrate how Zariz is taking Organic groups, Entity reference and Entity API to the next level.
